New Volkswagen marketing campaign has familiar faces

Television viewers who have already seen Volkswagen‘s latest marketing campaign have seen Max the Beetle, a character based on the original Beetle beloved by millions.

New commercials for the brand will also bring back a 1963 Micro bus as the two cars have conversations in the 30-second spots about models like the Jetta TDI.

For those who may find more nostalgia in the old cars than be interested in their newer brethren, some Volkswagens may offer great bang for the buck.

For example, the Jetta, which competes against the Honda Civic and other high-quality compacts, gets more than 30 miles per gallon when equipped with a diesel engine.

The 2008 Jetta was complimented by Edmunds.com editors for its strong performance against the competition, luxury features like one-touch power windows in an entry-level model as well as easy-to-use interior controls for things like the radio and air conditioning.

While Volkswagen hasn’t made any cars like the Micro Bus, those looking for an updated Max may find the New Beetle an attractive option, since Edmunds.com cited the 2005 model for great safety and a laundry list of standard features.

Diesels offer affordable way to increase mileage, save money

While it may feel weird to line up behind a tractor-trailer to use a diesel pump at the local gas station, some of the most fuel efficient used cars don’t run on regular.

Those looking to save money by buying a “sipper” rather than a gas guzzler can look to the fact that two of the top 10 most fuel efficient cars on sale in America don’t use spark plugs, according to Kelly Blue Book’s recent review.

Although “green” options like hybrids tend to dominate fuel economy and rankings of cars that are environmentally friendly, used cars such as the Volkswagen Jetta and BMW 3-series can be had cheaper than their electrically-enabled brethren.

More importantly, they’re much more affordable than comparable hybrids, while offering similar fuel economy, often up to 40 or 50 miles per gallon, depending on the model.

Although diesel is generally more expensive than regular gasoline, it should average only about 4 cents more per gallon this summer, according to federal forecasts.

So for a couple pennies more, a used diesel car may travel 10 to 20 miles farther for every gallon a customer puts into it.

Heidi Klum shows off German engineering

Recently, the public got to revere a German model with some sleek curves and showing off a new look. And Heidi Klum looked nice as well in her vintage dress and shoes.

The 35-year-old German model was recently on hand to show off her new pink customized Volkswagen Beetle at an event celebrating Barbie’s Malibu Dream House 50th birthday party.

Klum, the Emmy-nominated host of the popular television show Project Runway, is having what some may describe as a very good spring. Her reality show is scheduled to return to Lifetime, which will most likely enthrall fans of the reality show that pits unknown fashion designers against each other to see who’s “in” and who’s “out” in the fashion sense.

However, in terms of transportation, it could be argued that the Volkswagen Beetle has always been in style with its innovative rounded look and eye-like headlights.

The 2009 Beetle, which according to Edmunds.com has no significant changes from the past model, sports 150 horsepower with a 2.5 liter five-cylinder engine and 170 pounds-feet of torque, giving the seemingly smallish car enough power to make it one of the more exciting cars to drive.

Jetta TDI wins ‘Best of the Year’ honors

Citing its environmental-friendliness, fuel-efficiency and its appealing driving experience, MotorWeek named the Volkswagen Jetta TDI its “Best of the Year” 2009 Drivers’ Choice Award winner at the Chicago Auto Show this week.

Although the choice of a Volkswagen as the car of the year may not be too shocking, the fact that this car has a diesel engine makes the choice somewhat surprising. But John Davis, host of the PBS show MotorWeek says the choice of the Jetta TDI was clear.

“The Jetta TDI has no peer this year,” said Davis. “It is the best of all worlds rolled into one vehicle. It’s clean, powerful, fun to drive, roomy and comfortable, and it also happens to be very affordable. If history is any judge on past Volkswagen diesels, you can also add extremely reliable and durable to the list.”

In winning the award the TDI beat out 150 other vehicles that were evaluated by the show. It also named the car the Best Eco-Friendly vehicle.

Other cars taking home awards were the Honda Fit for Best Small Car, the Nissan GT-R for Best Performance Car and the Subaru Forester for Best Small Utility.
