Former VP driving again

It seems that getting used to a life outside of the White House isn’t the only change for Dick Cheney as the former vice president says he’s now learning some new technology and driving his own car.

In an interview with CNN, Cheney said he’s stepping into the modern technological age by working on a Blackberry and reading books on the Kindle. But another change for the man who was at one time the second most powerful man in the world is getting behind the wheel of his own car.

Cheney told CNN he’s taken to driving around his Virginia suburb, just outside of Washington, D.C.

Although it seems that while Cheney – who was barred from driving for the past eight years by the secret service – is much more like a regular citizen today than he was two months ago, he still gets a little more company on a trip to the store than the rest of Americans.

“Driving myself now,” Cheney told CNN. “Secret Service follows me around, but they now let me drive myself.”

It’s something current president Barack Obama is getting used to. Last year Obama sold his 2005 Chrysler 300C, which later appeared on the car auction site eBay selling for more than $150,000.

Playmate sells her used car on auction site

Playmate sells her used car on auction site

The demand for used cars is increasing and one former Playboy Playmate of the Year is hoping she can cash in on someone looking for a low mileage used car which once had a Playmate behind the wheel.

Sarah Jean Underwood, the 2007 Playboy Playmate of the Year is selling the 2007 convertible Mini Cooper S she received from Hugh Heffner for winning the 2007 award. The car, which has 12,900 miles, is currently available on eBay for the “Buy It Now” price of $34,999.99.

The eBay listing features numerous pictures of Underwood with the car (along with five sans Mini) and says that since moving back to Oregon, she no longer has use for the convertible.

Prospective buyers can test drive the car – which was featured in an issue of Playboy magazine and on the show The Girls Next Door – but would have to get to Scappoose, Oregon in order to see how well it handles.

Although eBay currently features four other 2007 Mini Cooper S convertibles which sell for as low as $17,500, Underwood’s price does not appear to be that much higher than the Kelley Blue Book suggested retail price of $29,875 for a car in similar condition.

Megan Fox and her G-Class

It’s a car suited for traversing the Amazon, but for actress Megan Fox the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the vehicle she chooses to tame the roads of California’s urban jungle.

Recently Fox was spotted driving a Mercedes G550, which according to the company starts at just over $100,000 – with 4-wheel drive and the ability to go 0-60 in six seconds, the G-Class seems like the perfect car for a Hollywood starlet trying to get away from the paparazzi.

But it’s unlikely G-Class drivers are going to win any environmental awards as the car gets 15 miles per gallon on the highway and an astonishingly low 11 miles per gallon in the city.

However, according to Mercedes, the city is not necessarily the place for the car.

“With 7-speed transmission hitched to a stalwart V-8 engine and three locking differentials for off-road handling, it’s as fun as it is commanding,” says Mercedes-Benz on its website. “For drivers who insist on legendary, the G-Class is the very real answer.”

Is Audi the car of the celebrities?

It appears that Audi might be the hot car these days as a number of celebrities have been seen sporting around in the cars of late with the most recent being newlywed Gisele Bundchen.

Bundchen, who married New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady last month, was spotted by paparazzi driving an Audi A8L, which according to Edmunds.com starts at around $78,000.

Also fans of the Audi A8L are Heidi Klum and her husband Seal who have been seen driving the carmaker’s W12 model which runs about $120,000 and can go 0-60 in under six seconds.

Obviously none of the A8L drivers are concerned with gas mileage as Audi says the car gets a combined 18 miles per gallon.

The Brazilian model joins a number of other celebrities driving Audi’s including the carmaker’s most recent spokesman, actor Jason Statham who said he was happy to be the face of Audi’s Super Bowl commercial since he drives one in real life.

Singer’s $1.4 million Ferrari Enzo damaged

Jay Kay, lead singer of the band Jamiroquai, must have gone into Virtual Insanity this weekend when his $1.4 million Ferrari Enzo was damaged while staying at a seaside resort in the UK.

Police say they have arrested a man who they believe caused thousands of dollars of damage to the sports car including a broken driver’s side window and shattered windshield.

Kay told the Daily Mail that he is devastated by the destruction of the car.

“It is a special motor car. It is a rare, special thing and I love it dearly,” he said. “It is worth a million [pounds] and the damage will cost a few quid to put right.”

According to Motor Trend which test drove a 2003 Ferrari Enzo, the car has a top speed of over 200 miles per hour and can hit zero to 60 in 3.14 seconds.

The car is perhaps best known for a 2007 accident in which actor Eddie Griffin crashed a Ferrari Enzo while promoting the film Redline. Some have speculated that the crash, which was filmed, was part of a PR campaign for the movie.

24 attempts to make car crashes more carbon neutral

In the world of action movies and TV shows, the car crash is about as American as apple pie. But in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint, some car crashes you will see on the screen will be friendlier to the environment than in the past.

The hit Fox TV show 24 is attempting to become the first “carbon neutral” show on television and according to the New York Times, executives are looking at ways to decrease the carbon dioxide emissions from the multiple car explosions on the program.

Since the show quickly discovered that it would be impossible to remove car crashes with explosions from the show, they decided to buy carbon offsets in the form of wind energy from India, according to the news provider.

Producers told the Times that they bought enough wind energy to offset 1,291 tons of carbon emission, which will account for a little more than half of the show’s car chases and explosions.

Hollywood is increasingly adopting green car initiatives in efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Last year a car rental agency started in Hollywood which allows stars like Penelope Cruz to show up to award shows in a fuel-efficient hybrid SUV.

Reality star buys ’68 Camaro SS for boyfriend

Reality stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag were recently spotted by paparazzi driving around in a minto-condition 1968 Chevy Camaro SS, which is apparently an early wedding gift.

The two stars from The Hills are planning a wedding later this year and media reports say Montag bought Pratt the red muscle car as a gift for their upcoming nuptials.

In front of photographers, the camera-loving couple revved the Camaro’s engine in a California parking lot and took pictures as Montag laid across the hood of the SS complete with a red bow.

The couple are expected to marry later this year with the lead-up to the big day being filmed by MTV for the next season of The Hills.

The 1968 Camaro is the first generation of one of the classic American muscle cars that was introduced to the public in 1966.

According to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), a baseline 1968 Camaro SS could run upwards of $34,000. Add in a 427 Engine and the price can skyrocket to around $61,000. The car’s originally selling price in 1968 was $3,038.

‘Green’ car rental helps stars stay environmentally friendly

During awards season, hundreds of A-list stars are driving – or being driven – to events like the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards in rented cars, which has given one company the idea of lending “green” cars to Hollywood stars.

The “green” movement in cars is popular these days not only for its cost savings at the pump, but because many people are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. The environmental impact is probably most important to the Hollywood elite who want to at least look like they’re doing their part.

It’s no surprise then that GreenSUV, a California company that rents hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles to celebrities, is getting attention from stars like Penelope Cruz.

According to TheDailyGreen.com, Cruz and fellow actress Meryl Streep used the car service to get the Academy Awards on Sunday and a number of stars used the service for the Golden Globes.

“I felt it was time for a luxury car service to take part in eliminating gas-guzzling, high-emission vehicles from the roads,” Green SUV CEO Damien Breen told the website. “We realize many people want to contribute to the environment, but can’t see themselves being driven around town in a Prius.”

Obama gets automobile history lesson

In President Barack Obama’s address to the joint session of Congress earlier this week he said the U.S., as inventors of the automobile, needed to give support to U.S. automakers. But it turns out that’s not historically accurate.

On Tuesday, the president said, “I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it,” a statement that has been critiqued not for its promise of spending, but for its accuracy.

Although American Henry Ford helped to bring the automobile to the masses in the 1890s, it is widely accepted that a German, Karl Benz (of Mercedes-Benz fame) invented the combustion-powered vehicle in 1885 that led to the cars we see on roads today.

The carmaker Daimler, which was born from the work of Benz and fellow German Gottlieb Daimler, says the president needs to brush up on his auto history.

“It’s a fact that Daimler invented the car,” Han Tjan, U.S. spokesman for the company told USA Today. “If someone says the U.S. invented the car, either it’s an incomplete statement or sloppy research.”

Morgan Freeman sued over car crash

Morgan Freeman is being sued by a woman who accuses the actor of negligence when they were involved in a car crash in which she was a passenger.

Demaris Meyer also denied that she was Freeman’s mistress, saying the two were not involved in a romantic relationship.

Last August, the 71-year-old Freeman was driving Meyer’s Nissan Maxima while she was in the passenger seat. Authorities say the couple was driving through a dark highway in Mississippi when the car went off the road, flipping several times before landing upright.

Meyer says the crash, which left her with a broken wrist and torn labrum, has changed her life.

“I could not take care of myself for several months. I have not been able to go back to work and still am suffering both physically and emotionally as a result of the accident,” she said on Wednesday at a news conference at the office of her lawyer, Gloria Allred.

Meyer did not announce how much she was seeking in the suit, but said she was looking to recover medical expenses, lost wages, property damages, permanent disability and pain and suffering.
