New York City cops will soon be driving the Mustang Mach-E. In Dec., the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services announced that the city plans to order 184 of the Mach-E electric vehicles for emergency responders and law enforcement. The crossovers should arrive by mid-2022.

New Yorkers may already be familiar with the Mustang Mach-E since one new city taxi company already uses them. It runs entirely on electric power and will get 480 horsepower and generate 600 pound-feet of torque. The Mach-E can accelerate from zero to 60 in just 5.2 seconds and has a regenerative braking system that allows for one-pedal driving.

The Mach-E has a 270-mile range, and since it needs a charging station instead of a gas pump, the city has already installed 29 fast chargers specifically for the New York City Police Department. The city also installed 103 chargers for public use, with another 275 fast chargers arriving by the end of 2022.

Ford will make some modifications to the Mach-E for the police use, and the initial order of the all-electric vehicles will allow the department to test out these modifications and the vehicle’s performance. They will work out any maintenance and operational issues before adding more to the fleet. The long-range plan is to completely replace the 6,200-car fleet with all-electric vehicles by 2035.

Tesla to Sell Electric Cars to New York City

Tesla is also working on a contract to sell their Model 3 electric vehicles to New York City. The contract is still in the initial phases. The number of Model 3 vehicles in the contract wasn’t disclosed, but for the initial phase, it’s estimated that the city will purchase between 200 and 300. The Model 3 Tesla’s will become patrol cars and is part of the mayor’s plan to completely replace the internal combustion vehicles in the current fleet with electric cars.

The Tesla Model 3 can generate up to 543 horsepower depending on the model, with the standard models getting 430 horsepower. The rear-wheel-drive models will sprint from zero to 60 in 5.1 seconds, while the Performance trim gets there in just 3.5 seconds.

Bestselling Cars in New York City

While the rest of the country was buying pickup trucks such as the Ford F-150 and the Toyota Tacoma, the people in New York City preferred the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This was followed by the Hyundai Tucson, the Honda CR-V, and then the Hyundai Elantra.

New Yorkers were also buying used cars. The most popular model on the used car list is the Honda Accord and then the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The reason for the Grand Cherokee’s popularity is its easy driving manners, luxury interior, and versatility. This SUV will easily zip around city streets and fits into tight spaces. When New Yorkers want to head out of the city on a weekend adventure, the Grand Cherokee will take them anywhere they want to go. They can drive to the country in comfort and style and take it over rough off-road terrain.

The standard engine for the Grand Cherokee is a 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine that puts out 295 horsepower. An optional 5.7-liter V-8 delivers 360 horsepower, and another optional 3.0-liter V-6 gets you even more horsepower. The Grand Cherokee is more than just a city driver, it’s an excellent all-around vehicle.
