Ford to unveil high performance Focus

Often thought of as an affordable car for young drivers, the Ford Focus is about to get a new look. According to The Detroit News, Ford is set to unveil the Focus ST, a high performance version of the compact car, at next week's Frankfurt Auto Show.

The unveiling of the Focus ST will mark a return to form for Ford, which only has two high performance vehicles on the market right now, the Mustang GT500 and the F-150 Raptor. Some experts have speculated the the Focus might just be the first in a line of new performance vehicles that would include the Fusion and the Fiesta.

"SVT [Special Vehicles Team] was never gone, just because we didn't have a car coming out every year," Jost Capito, the head of global performance vehicle strategy, told the news source. "We never let it die or questioned SVT, even when times were bad."

Texas raises maximum speed limit to 85 m.p.h

Anybody who is feeling restricted by the 65 miles-per-hour speed limit throughout much of the country may want to head to the Lone Star State. Texas recently upped its maximum speed limit to 85 miles-per-hour, CBS affiliate KXII reports.

Although no street in the state has a limit above 80, the ceiling of 85 is the highest in the country. However, state officials have not ruled out the possibility of upping some sections of road to meet the limit pending an inspection performed by engineers.

"Increased speeds will lead to more accidents whenever you have heavy traffic volume," Texas Highway Patrol trooper Mark Tackett told the news source. "That's why the engineers are going to go out and they're going to survey the particular areas to see if it's safe to do so."

The measure saw widespread support in the state legislature, KXII reports. In fact, state representative Larry Phillips highlighted the fact that West Texas made similar changes and has not seen any negative effects.

Regardless of the speed one is driving, having a safe, reliable used car is a must. New Jersey Auto Auction offers plenty of makes and models at affordable prices.

Kelly Blue Book lists its picks for top tailgating cars

The arrival of fall means a lot of things, but for a large portion of the population it is all about the return of football season. Of course, with college and pro football kicking off over the next few days, tailgating parties will be springing up all across the country.

While food and fanfare is certainly a must at any tailgating party, if your car is not up to snuff the whole thing could be put in jeopardy. To help all the tailgaters out there get the most out of their pre-game parties, Kelly Blue Book recently released its list of the top 10 cars for tailgating.

"Forget the beach parties and don't worry about the holidays just yet – it's time for cold drinks and hot dogs before a stadium-sized event," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book'. "And to throw a proper tailgating party, you need a proper tailgating car. We've ranked the top 10 new party-mobiles to assist anyone in planning their next parking-lot party."

The list was compiled by the editors of the company's website, kbb.com, and focused on a number factors including seating capacity, electronics and amenities such as built in coolers.

Starting off the list is the 2011 Ford Explorer. This SUV has been a standard on roads for years, and it is especially well-suited for the parking lot before the game. In addition to comfortably seating seven, it features folding rows and a fully-adjustable front passenger seat so it can accommodate any and all cargo as well.

A little further upon the list is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Known for its spacious interior and smooth ride, this popular SUV also has something few others do – an excellent sound system. Specifically, the website says the Cherokee is outfitted with a 10 speaker, 506-watt system.

Though the Explorer and Cherokee are solid options, experts say it can't compare to the 2011 Dodge Ram. This powerful pickup offers plenty of space with its expansive bed, but its what lies beneath that really sets it apart. According to kbb.com, the truck has locking bedside bins that can hold and astonishing 240 12-ounce cans. It also has under-seat compartments for plenty of extra space.

Fort Collins tops the list of safest driving cities

Allstate recently released its list of which cities have the safest driver, and for the second year in a row Fort Collins, Colorado, topped the list. The average driver in Fort Collins will experience a collision once every 14 years, the study showed, which is significantly below the national average of every 10 years.

The seventh annual report, which analyzes the 200 biggest cities within the United States, was started as a way for the insurance company to boost awareness of the importance of safe driving.

"Safety is a critical component to creating a world-class city; we have our residents to thank as they are undoubtedly the reason Fort Collins is one of the best places to live, work, and play," the city's Mayor Karen Weitkunat said. "I'm honored to be a part of a community that is consistently recognized as one of the nation's best."

Allstate also offered a few tips to drivers looking to increase their safety while out on the road. Regular maintenance, including checking your breaks, tires, battery and hoses is crucial, as is minimizing distractions while behind the wheel.

GM, Chrysler have standout August

American automakers General Motors and Ford had a very successful August, but both were behind Chrysler. With a bevvy of updated models, the manufacturer saw a 31 percent rise in sales compared to last year, the 17th month in a row where sales rose in relation to the previous year, USA Today reports.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the boost in sales was the resurgence of the Jeep Wrangler. Compared to August 2010, the classic Jeep sold 58 percent more, giving the model its best month since December 2007. The company also re-branded its Sebring sedan under the name Chrysler 200, and subsequently saw sales jump 142 percent.

As for GM, the venerable company had a good August as well. Specifically, the Chevy Cruze, GMC Arcada and Cadillac CTS all rose in sales.

"The 'new GM' is making the strides it promised. About the only negative signs on GM's spreadsheet of August sales were for models being discontinued or soon to be replaced," says analyst Michelle Krebs told the publication.

Tulane researchers turn newspaper into fuel

Scientists across the globe have been looking for alternative fuel sources for years, but a group of researchers at Tulane University may have stumbled across one source nobody considered – old newspapers.

The team of scientists believes that a bacteria found in old newsprint has the ability to turn organic material into butanol, which can be used as a gas-tank substitute, The Detroit News reports. The bacteria was first discovered in the New Orleans zoo, and the researchers say this finding could have a significant impact on alternative energy.

"In the United States alone, at least 323 million tons of cellulosic materials that could be used to produce butanol are thrown out each year," Harshad Velankar, a scientists working with the research team, told the news source.

While the findings are exciting, it is still a long way off until the fuel source is ever implemented. According to the publication, a patent is still pending on the strain and whether or not is is commercially viable will remain to be seen.

Ford, Toyota top Forbes list of used cars

Choosing between a new and used car can sometimes be a difficult choice for motorists. However, for those looking to find the best deal possible, sometimes pre-owned vehicles are the best route to take. Still, the decision-making process can be tough to make, especially with so many choice available. Forbes recently unveiled its list of the best used cars currently on the market.

For families who are looking for a car with plenty of seating capacity, the 2008 Ford Edge is the way to go. In addition to offering five passengers a comfortable and quiet ride, the Edge also comes with Ford's Sync voice control system, which allows drivers to access mp3 players, text messages and cell phones.

As for sedans, the publication recommends the Ford Fusion or the Mercury Milan. Both models come with an adequate 160-horsepower engine while also providing a roomy interior that can seat five.

Motorists looking to get behind the wheel of a used pick-up truck should check out the Toyota Tundra, Forbes says. The main selling points of the Tundra are that it offers plenty of power (381 horsepower, 5.7-liter engine) without sacrificing a smooth ride.

Whether looking for a Tundra or a Fusion, New Jersey Auto Auction offers motorists with plenty of makes and models at affordable prices.

Dartz pushes female-only car with Playboy bunny ad

Russia-based auto manufacturer has made a name for itself as of late by turning heads, and the unveiling of its latest SUV certainly did just that. Autoblog reports that its newest car, the female-oriented Pombron Iron Diamond, is being marketed in a very unique way.

The first ad for the car features a a Playboy bunny, fresh off the pages of the September issue from Latvia, dancing around in front of the uniquely-designed car. The ad might seem to be appeal more to men than the supposed female target audience, but it certainly has made waves.

As for the car itself, Dartz explained Iron Diamond earlier this year. However, how it is specifically tailored to women remains to be seen.

"All we see the modern trends – more and more ladies like to drive big cars, and if so – of course they want to drive unique and exclusive," the company said, adding in poorly-translated English that the SUV only has three doors and is shorter than most models.

Crown Victoria being phased out by Ford

The Ford Crown Victoria rose to prominence as the popular choice for police cars across the United States, but now the iconic vehicle is being retired. The Detroit Free Press reports that while consumers haven't been able to buy the cars since 2008, police stations still had the opportunity, but now that era has come to a close.

The reason for the change is that Ford is expected to provide law enforcement with a new line of cars based off their popular Taurus and Explorer SUV designs. Despite the move, which is being conducted in the hopes that it will improve fuel economy, some police stations are hesitant to adopt the switch.

"The Taurus isn't going to work for us. It's too small," John Zumalt, the police chief in South Charleston, North Carolina, told the news source. "We're looking at the Caprice from Chevrolet and the Dodge Charger."

The car has also been a popular product among average drivers as well, who praised its rear wheel drive and durable V-8 engine, making it one of the best cars to drive in the winter.

Cadillac Escalade the most likely to be stolen, study says

The Cadillac Escalade has become somewhat of a status symbol, so it comes as no surprise that car thieves target the luxury SUV more than any other car. The Associated Press reports that a new study by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shows the vehicle is six times more likely to be stolen than the average car.

The findings were based on insurance claims of stolen cars between 2008 and 2010 and also included cars that had components such as parts and stereos stolen as well. Specifically, 10.8 claims were filed for every 1,000 insured Escalades compared to an average of 1.7 per 1,000.

"It's so wildly popular as far as pop culture goes," Matt Moore, a vice president of HLDI told the AP. "Watching the TV you see professional athletes coming in and out of them and other celebrities too. It's a status symbol."

While the Escalade was the most popular among crooks, the Audi A6 four-wheel drive was the least sought-after. Additionally, two American-made cars, the Mercury Mariner and Chevroley Equinox were low on the list as well.
