Choosing the Perfect Commuter Car

Whether your job is far away in New York City, or you have to trek across town every day to get to the office, the miles you put on your car can really add up.  Not only does sitting in traffic put added wear on your vehicle and waste gas, but it can be a draining experience for you as well.

If you're gearing up to buy a car, you should look at features like fuel economy and passenger comfort. It is also a good idea to consider safety features like blind spot warnings and other technology, which can help make your commute safer and less stressful. There are many cars, trucks and SUVs that offer features like these, and Bankrate.com recently provided a list of great choices for commuters.

When it comes to saving gas, hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Prius can be ideal. The Prius C gets approximately 46 miles to the gallon on the highway, and since you can switch between gas and electric power, you won't have to fill up quite as often. This car also features safety technology like brake assist, traction control and vehicle stability control, which can dramatically reduce your risk of fender benders in stop-and-go traffic.

The Hyundai Elantra also made the list, thanks to its low initial price tag as well as its 38 MPG fuel economy and comfortable interior. In fact, the 2012 model was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Bankrate.com also listed the Audi A3, Nissan Altima, Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Volt as top choices for commuter cars.

All of these models have been available for years, which means drivers may be able to find used versions at New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer carries a wide selection of makes and models, and every vehicle on the lot if CARFAX certified, so drivers know they'll be getting behind the wheel of a reliable ride.

Chrysler to Start Charity in Honor of CEO Sergio Marchionne

Chrysler is starting a charitable foundation in the name of the company's CEO, Sergio Marchionne. The charity will support the educational needs of Chrysler employees' children by granting scholarships, beginning in 2014. Ronald Thompson, the lead director of the Chrysler Group LLC Board of Directors, credits Marchionne's ability to foster change and his strong leadership qualities as the inspiration to help drive the success of younger generations.

"I am extremely privileged and thankful to have this foundation established given the extraordinary commitment made by all stakeholders in the rebirth of Chrysler after the events of 2009," said Marchionne. "The action being proposed by the Board of Directors provides an opportunity to support important causes consistent with the values of Chrysler, with an initial focus on the educational needs and ambitions of our employees' children."

Marchionne stepped in as CEO of Chrysler after the company emerged from filing bankruptcy in 2009, according to Autoblog. Since then he has worked to improve the automaker's status and helped it recover to nearly pre-recession levels. The automotive business mogul, who turned Fiat into a fast-growing business, has continued to refuse compensation for his work with Chrysler. This bold move has allowed more funds to remain in the business, and helped to instill trust from employees.

It is Marchionne's generous, giving nature that has impressed the Chrysler Board of Directors, and inspired them to start this nonprofit. The automaker will provide funds for the charity, partly from sales profits. Those interested in purchasing a Chrysler may be able to find a used model that fits their needs at New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer carries a wide selection of makes and models, and every vehicle on the lot is CARFAX certified.

Dodge Ram 1500 Named Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year

Every year Motor Trend puts a number of popular pickup trucks through a series of tests to determine which model is the cream of the crop. This year, the Dodge Ram 1500 was the clear victor, as the truck is fuel efficient, powerful and loaded with features. Motor Trend's panel of judges gauge each contestant's worth in six categories – design advancement, efficiency, safety, performance, value and engineering excellence, and the Ram exceeded expectations in every test.

"We had a small but solid field of contenders for Motor Trend's Truck of the Year," said Edward Loh, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend. "But in the end, the choice was clear: Ram 1500 not only withstood our rigorous testing, it impressed at every step along the way. Our judges were won over by the performance of Ram 1500's broad array of standard and optional equipment. It's a truck that can be tailored to meet most anyone's needs. For these reasons and more, we're excited to name the Ram 1500 the Motor Trend 2013 truck of the Year."

When you buy a new truck, like the Ram 1500, every optional feature you want will increase the price, and this can really add up. However, if you opt to seek out a used model, you may be able to find all the features you want and more. Since the vehicle is pre-owned it may already come with all of the amenities you were looking for at a fraction of the cost. If you shop at New Jersey State Auto Auction, you'll have the added guarantee of buying a reliable truck, because every model on the lot is CARFAX certified.

Good News for Used Car Shoppers: Car Sales Improved in November

The numbers are in, and November turned out to be a good month for the automotive industry. New car sales saw a 2.6 percent month-over-month increase from October, according to a recent report from TrueCar.com. Compared to November 2011, last month's new vehicle sales improved 12.7 percent. Not only are there more buyers, but consumers are also spending more on their purchases than they have in the recent past.

"November was a strong month for new car sales, and the impact from hurricane Sandy helped to boost auto sales to its highest since February 2008," said Jesse Toprak, senior market analyst for TrueCar.com. "Import automakers got the biggest lift due to some increased incentive spending building momentum heading into next year."

When there are improvements in new car sales, the effects can also be felt across the used vehicle market. During the recession, many drivers held on to their current vehicles or opted to buy used models instead of new ones. These two factors led to a decline in used car inventories and an increase in prices.

Now, as more drivers are trading in their cars and purchasing new models, the used market is seeing improvements. In fact, TrueCar.com reported that used car sales last month were 3.8 percent higher than in November 2011. There are more vehicles available for sale, and a smaller pool of buyers, making it easier for drivers to find the cars they want at lower prices.

New Jersey State Auto Auction is a great place for those in the New York/New Jersey area to track down the cars, trucks and SUVs they want. Not only does the dealer have 4 acres of vehicles to choose from, but every model on the lot is CARFAX certified. This allows car shoppers to drive away confident that they are behind the wheel of a reliable ride.

New Steel Is Lighter, Safer and Cheaper than Other Materials

When the government announced that all automakers would need to have a fleetwide fuel economy of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, many manufacturers and industry experts raised concerns that this would result in increased costs to the consumer. They claimed that the cost of technology and parts needed to facilitate the fuel efficiency improvements may outweigh the financial benefits of reducing gas consumption.

However, a recent report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found there is a high-strength steel that is both lightweight and affordable. Reducing a car's overall weight by using lighter materials can dramatically improve its fuel economy. The report indicates that for every pound the lightweight steel reduces a vehicle's weight, it costs roughly $0.46, while aluminum, which is the standard option, costs about $1.55 per pound.

"Cost models have traditionally associated a significant cost penalty with alternative materials, and this NHTSA report confirms this while demonstrating advanced high-strength steels provide significant mass reduction at the lowest possible cost," said lawrence W. Kavanagh, president of Steel Market Development Institute, a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute. "This is significant, as automakers have the challenging task of developing affordable vehicles that meet new and tightening regulations."

In addition to being cheaper and lighter, this steel proved to be safer in the study's crash tests than other materials.

"This extraordinary safety performance is due to the steel's unique ability to reinvent itself by continually expanding the range of properties and performance available to the auto design engineer," Kavanagh continued.

As engineers begin to design new vehicles, there are likely to be significant changes to automakers' lineups in coming years. Drivers who need a car now can find fuel efficient used models at New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer has a wide selection of makes and models to choose from, and every vehicle on the lot is CARFAX certified.

Preparing to Travel in Winter Weather

As winter draws near, many Americans are already preparing for the colder temperatures and adverse weather conditions that this season brings. In fact, some areas have already seen a good deal of snowfall, which makes it even more important to prepare your vehicles for the season. There are a number of things you can do to winterize your car and stay safe on the road this winter, whether you are planning to travel for the holidays or you're going to stick around home.

"While we're all preparing for visitors or planning trips to see friends and loved ones, we can make getting ready for winter weather a part of the preparations…" said Leslie Chapman-Henderson, president and CEO of FLASH, a leading U.S. consumer advocacy group for protecting families and their homes from natural and manmade disasters. "It's smart to prepare in case you are marooned by having a well-stocked winter storm survival kit in your car."

Security blankets, extra clothes, road flares, flashlights, batteries and non-perishable foods are important elements of a good winter emergency kit to keep in your car. You may also want to throw a small shovel in the truck in case you get snowed in. Sand, gravel or rock salt can come in handy if your car gets stuck on an icy spot.

It can be a good idea to visit a mechanic and have them perform routine maintenance before the snow starts flying. It is important to ensure there is enough antifreeze in the system and check for any leaks or other issues that could present a danger on the road. The experts at NJ State Auto Auction can help drivers in the New York/New Jersey area with any maintenance or repairs they may need.

The coupe has a well-balanced chassis, which, coupled with dynamic driving control and handling, makes it a fun vehicle to drive.

"The MX-5 Miata sets the bar high on sports car performance and driving pleasure, which is not lost among its increasing fan base as the vehicle continues to be a world record holder as both the most popular two-seat roadster ever built and the most raced nameplate in motorsports," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. Honda Reaps Benefits of Improving Economic Conditions in November

Across the automotive industry, November's sales are expected to surpass pre-recession levels, and Honda is one of the many brands that has seen vast improvements in recent years. In fact, the Japanese automaker just announced that its sales for the month broke the company's all-time record. Last month, there were more than 116,500 units sold, which is a 38.9 percent increase over the numbers from November 2011. The industry as a whole only saw about a 1.1 percent improvement in the same time period.

"We are now surpassing sales records set pre-recession, a true sign that our business has recovered," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "Honda's all-time best November demonstrates the fundamental strength of our core products."

The Civic, which debuted in 1973, broke a 22-year-old record in November as well, selling more than 30,000 units. This not only shattered the record set in 1990, but it marks a 75 percent improvement from one year ago. While this may seem high, it pales in comparison to the Accord's sales improvements. This sedan saw an 83 percent increase over the same month in 2011, even though it undersold the Civic by nearly 4,000 units.

Honda's most popular models, including the Civic and Accord, have been pleasing customers for many years, which means that drivers interested in purchasing used models will have no trouble finding the pre-owned Honda of their choice at New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer carries a wide selection of makes and models, and every vehicle on the lot is CARFAX certified.
