Natural gas-powered cabs begin service in California

Some of the most eco-friendly cars in the country recently hit the streets in Southern California in the form of taxi cabs. Ten Ford Transit Connect cabs, which are powered by compressed natural gas, were put into service on Friday, USA Today reports.

The early squad of innovative cabs is just one of many that will come in the future, the company says. Though currently limited to the Yellow Cab of Orange Country, they will soon be making an appearance in Anaheim, California as well. Additionally, Transit Connect cabs are also in use in Las Vegas and Chicago.

"Our goal is to convert our entire fleet to alternative fuels, so bringing the CNG Transit Connect Taxis into service is (a) step in that direction," Tim Conlon, president of California Yellow Cab said in a statement.

Honda has unveiled a specially-designed Civic that runs on the alternative fuel, but it is only available in four states, California being one of them, according to the publication.

Though it may be a few years off until such alternative fuel sources are made available to a wider audiences, motorists looking to find a fuel-efficient compact cars can look at New Jersey Auto Auction, which offers plenty of models at affordable prices.
