Car enthusiasts faithful to Volvo

Despite a rumor that the Ford Motor Company may cut Volvo as a subsidiary from the organization, fans of the automobile brand say they will stick with their favorite car no matter what, Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

George Downs, 70, recently attended a gathering of Volvo fans in San Antonio, Texas and said he drove his 2001 V70 wagon from Bartlesville, Oklahoma for the meetup, according to the article.

“I’ve owned 13 Volvos, and I can tell you that they’re sturdy, rugged, reliable and safe,” Downs told the news provider who was reportedly standing by his car wearing a plastic Viking hat.

Downs added that if Volvo gets dropped by Ford, he would like to see the car company return to the trucks it used to make in 1999.

For many people, the draw of owning a Volvo car is the vehicle’s safety features. The company has received numerous awards in the past for its dedication to ensure driver and passenger safety in the event of a crash.

Recently Consumer Reports listed the 2002 Volvo S60 as one of the best used cars to purchase on the market.

Which cars are better used?

According to U.S. News & World Report, people interested in car shopping might want to consider looking at a used car first when it comes to a couple of models.

A number of reports have said it’s a good time to buy a used car with the Dow Jones reporting that used car prices had dropped in the last year, but according to the magazine, there are a couple of cars that would be good used car purchases anyway.

Take the Volvo S60 for example. It’s rumored that a new design for the S60 will be coming out in 2010, which means a 2009 model will depreciate in value more rapidly than normal. But the magazine says a 2005 model might be worth your while as Kelley Blue Book estimates it at $13,585.

Another car the magazine suggests buying used is the Mitsubishi Eclipse. U.S. News says a 2008 Eclipse is around $6,000 less than a brand new model and with a high depreciation rate, it’s likely you can an older model even cheaper.

Across the board it is cheaper to buy a used car today than it was a year ago with the National Automotive Dealers Association reporting that used cars in every category fell in 2008.

In winter weather a Volvo might be a good choice

With recent snowstorms that have battered the East Coast, many people are looking for a New York used car that can handle the snow and ice and keep them safe. For a lot of people, that has turned out to be a Volvo.

Jim MacPherson, who writes an auto column for the Harford Courant, says Volvo’s reputation as being equipped with numerous safety features make them a popular choice for people looking to buy a used car this time of year, especially in snow affected regions like New York and New Jersey.

For those who want to haul some groceries, or people, around during the winter months, MacPherson says the Volvo XC90 is a good option with its “car-like” feel and roominess that seats five to seven passengers.

MacPherson writes that dealers are hardly able to keep the SUVs on the lot, with one reporting that seven were recently sold in a single day.

“Comfortable, safe, roomy and highly competent in the snow, it is little wonder that seven Volvo XC90s would be sold on a single Saturday,” said MacPherson.

According to Edmunds, late model XC90s saw few changes over the years, although a high-powered 268 horsepower, twin-turbocharged model was sold from 2003-2005.
