Why Buy a Used Luxury Car over a New Compact?

Generic Luxury Car

If you are in the market for a new car, one of the first questions you likely asked yourself was whether to go with something new or used. Many consumers overlook the fact that many used luxury vehicles can be purchased for the same price or less than a brand new compact car. With this in mind, many consumers find themselves asking the question: new and basic or used and luxurious? We discuss the thought process below:

It is better to buy a used luxury car?

If you want a vehicle that looks great for a deceivingly low price, a used luxury car is a great route to take. A luxury vehicle is likely to have many of the comfort and convenience features that likely are not available on a newer, albeit lesser priced vehicle. While a new compact car may offer more updated technological features, depending on what your priorities in a vehicle are, a used luxury vehicle with premium amenities may be a more compelling proposition to take.

While a used luxury car might make a little bigger hole in your pocket, there is a distinct financial advantage as well – less depreciation. While compact cars are going to depreciate quickly due to a lower price at new as well as far more commonality in the market place, a luxury car will suffer a reduced depreciation rate and will hold its value over a more extended period of time.

While either option has a variety of reasons to make it your next vehicle, a used luxury car is often a route that many consumers do not fully consider.

Visit the New Jersey State Auto Auction to take a look at some great options of vehicles across multiple price points that may be outside of the choices that you were originally considering.

The top car rivalries of all time

This March seems to be a month full of fierce competition. March Madness turned friends into foes as brackets were drafted and dreams were dashed, and the presidential primaries got even more heated. Even Batman and Superman were fighting in Hollywood's latest superhero flick, though nobody's really sure why.

It seems in the spirit of the season, then, to take a look at some of the top car rivalries of all time.

Toyota vs. Honda
The two big Japanese manufacturers have a long and turbulent history together. Sub5Zero explained that Honda was founded in an act of seeming defiance – Soichira Honda went his own way and created the company's first car, the T360 pickup, despite the protestations of Japan's manufacturing leaders. The two brands bump heads frequently with their sizeable control of the family sedan market, though the source noted their supercars like the NSX and Supra sometimes scuffle, too. Maybe's there's good feelings underneath it all, though: Honda's founder shared pistons with Toyota prior to World War II.

VW GTI vs. Ford Focus ST
These two hatchbacks both bring the heat. The VW GTI has the street cred, according to Popular Mechanics:

"For hot-hatchbacks devotees, the VW GTI is as revered as the Porsche 911 or the Chevy Corvette. This is the car that defines the segment."

Pretty high praise, to be sure. But Ford brought its A-game with the Ford Focus ST, generating 247 hp and 266 torque, surpassing the GTI in engine performance. However, the Focus ST is a bit heavy, and doesn't have the GTI's 258 lb-ft torque at 1500 rpm.

The verdict: Tie. Popular Mechanics decided that the two vehicles are rather evenly matched – a perfect opportunity for Ford and VW to raise the stakes next year.

fightIn Sept. 2008, Nissan and Porsche sent representatives to fight each other to prove whose car was better (just kidding, this never happened … that we know of).

Nissan GT-R vs. Porsche 911 Turbo
Speaking of the Porsche 911, it's caught up in its own little rivalry. Perhaps "little" isn't the right word – Jalopnik readers named this feud as one of the top 10 most vicious car rivalries of all time. Nissan threw some serious shade back in 2008 when they decided to start setting some lap records on the tracks in Nürburgring, Germany – also known as The Royal and Impenetrable Kingdom of Porsche (unofficially).

Of course, Porsche went into full get-off-my-lawn mode and took its 911 model to Turbo status. Nissan boosted its GT-R, Porsche responded with their own updates, and the two cars took the track to see who reigned supreme.

Wrote Raphael Orlove in a post for Jalopnik:

"Sure, the monomaniacal focus on lap times got a bit silly, but it was an epic battle for sports car dominance nonetheless."

Ford Mustang vs. Chevrolet Camaro
Both manufactured in Detroit, the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro have been fighting since they were first introduced. The Mustang shook up the U.S. car market when it arrived on the scene in 1964, and Chevrolet – who was churning out Corvairs and Novas – knew they had to up the ante, Sub5Zero explained.

"The Mustang and Camaro have been fighting since they were first introduced."

Thus were the competitive circumstances of the Camaro's birth on a fateful day in 1967. Did the Camaro bow under the weight of the pressure, and all the hopes and dreams riding on it? No, it rose to the occasion, proving a formidable opponent to the Mustang in the ensuing decades.

There may be a whiff of change in the air, though. USA Today reported that the redesigned Mustang has set itself apart as the favorite, with its updated engine and suspension. The proof is in the numbers: Ford sold 113,607 Mustangs in the first 11 months of 2015 – a 55.4 percent increase in sales, while Camaro sales were down 9.5 percent, with Chevrolet selling only 72,136 of the cars during the same time period. Don't think this fight is won, though – it's very possible the Camaro will make an epic comeback.

If you'd rather take a break from all the competition, head to NJ State Auto, where you can find the best car to suit your needs, at an affordable price.

Never Ignore Dashboard Warning Lights

shutterstock_215790505

Drivers have the tendency to ignore dashboard lights at times thus exposing themselves and their fellow travelers to potential hazards. When you are driving a vehicle, there are chances that any of the dashboard lights have been switched on because of a number of reasons. While there are certain warning lights that have been made as specific cases for individual brands, there are certain others that are common to all cars.

Remember not all the warning lights mean the same thing. While red warning light points towards a serious problem, an orange or a yellow light means that any of the electrical or mechanical components is in requirement of an immediate rehaul. If the light continues to flash, you should make it a point to contact your dealership immediately. A blue or a green light means that there is nothing to worry for the moment and that a specific system is working as it should be.

Remember that if a critical light has switched itself on, it should immediately be resolved. Consequently, the car needs to be stopped and allowed to be handed over for repair work. Ignoring the signal means that you are not only putting yourself at a greater risk, but all the warranty conditions are becoming void.

Make sure that you know the meanings of the specific warning lights and take steps to address the same immediately.

There Is a Way to Test Drive Cars, Here Are a Few Tips

driving

Well, if you need to make a decision to buy a car, there is a pressing requirement to go for a comprehensive test drive. It is essential to know that the car you are going to buy fits your requirement. Here are a few tips to do your test drive properly:

  1. Make sure that you do your homework: Just don’t wander around when you reach the dealership. You already must have made a decision as to which are the models you want to select your car from. Drive all the selected models back to back in order to be sure about the specifications and the comfort factors involved.
  2. Check the various control features: Once you are behind the steering wheel, make sure that you take a proper stock of all the control features. Ensure that you are in charge of all the controls before making the final decision to buy a concerned car.
  3. Reflect on your drive: Once you have come back from a drive, the salesman would do everything he can to convince you to buy the concerned car. But don’t get swayed. Just reflect on the drive that you have undertaken and make a critical analysis of how well it came through.

Only after you are relatively sure about a car’s relative quality, you should make the final decision.

Saving Money When Buying a Used Car

shutterstock_130513676

If you have bought a used car, there is a possibility that you could save a significant amount of money by increasing the deductible in your car insurance. A lot of factors determine the amount of money that you need to dish out for the insurance premium. The factors include your age, driving history, the place you live and marital status. While the other factors are beyond your control, one thing that could do to increase your savings is to change the insurance deductible.

The deductible part in your insurance claim is the amount of money that you need to pay out of your pocket before filing the insurance claim. Just in case your total claim is $3,000 and your deductible component is $500, the company will pay you only $2,500 after taking out the deductible component. The insurance company considers that the higher the deductible amount, the lesser chance a car owner will file claim for a lower claim amount.

It has been seen that by increasing the deductible amount to $500 from $250, there is a 7 percent savings in car premium. On an average, you could decrease your premium by 16 percent if you increase the deductible amount to $2,000 from $500. The amount of savings would also depend on your insurer in addition to the state where you might be living.

How Many Miles is Too Many Miles for a Used Car

shutterstock_369995453

Well, just in case you are finding it difficult to procure a vehicle loan or you want to spend less on the monthly installments, then buying a used car might be a good idea. However, you need to be more careful while buying a used car than buying a brand new car. While you do need to consider the cost of the vehicle, you do need to consider the extra bucks for unseen repairs as well. While, you might manage to get a used car spending a lesser amount of money, you need to keep some money in the reserve so as to tackle emergencies.

Consequently, one of the things that you need to see is the number of miles the prospective car might have traveled. This magic figure might be a good way to asses if the concerned car is purchasable or not. Usually, mile coverage of about 12,000 per year is considered to be normal. Although some cars travel less than that, there are other cars that might have traveled much more. Thus, a car that was bought in 2002 could be considered to be bought if it has traveled close to 60,000 miles in 2007. It is better to avoid a car that has covered more than 110,000 miles. Additionally, more miles on the highway are better than more miles along the city roads.

If you are interested in buying a used car, you could try visiting the New Jersey State Auto Auction store today.
