BMW Z4 boasts high performance – and price tag

The 2011 BMW Z4 coupe/convertible recently hit dealerships, and those looking for a performance-oriented model that also boasts some luxury features may find it to be a nice choice.

According to the Associated Press, the 335 horsepower contained in the Z4 sDrive35is' V6 engine is the most of any non-V8 convertibles on the market. Boasting a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds, drivers with a need for speed will likely fall in love with the Z4 sDrive35is. The car is also available with a 255-horsepower six-cylinder for a slightly reduced price.

With a retractable hardtop and eye-catching styling, the Z4 is a luxurious vehicle. The news source points out that it's not a very fuel-efficient one, however, getting 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 17 in the city, putting it below some SUVs. Most drivers likely won't care when they're tearing up the open road with the top down.

All those horses under the hood are nice, but economic drivers may want to wait for the new Z4 to hit the used car market, as buying pre-owned will likely shave off a substantial portion of the $52,000 automobile.

BMW, Mercedes plan smaller offerings

The trend in the automobile industry as of late has been toward smaller cars, with crossovers replacing the full-size SUV and hatchbacks like the Ford Fiesta selling like hotcakes. Now, two luxury manufacturers are getting in on the game by announcing plans to introduce several vehicles that will be smaller than any of their current offerings.

BMW is planning to introduce a new family of subcompacts that will feature front-wheel drive. BMW director of sales and marketing Ian Robertson told the Automotive News that there will be several variants, but all will feature a four-cylinder engine. Early plans indicate that the new class will be dubbed "UKL."

"It will be a relatively big segment because we have several body styles," he told the news source.

Meanwhile, BMW's chief competitor Mercedes-Benz is also looking to expand into that market. The company will introduce a number of new designs based on its B-Class platform, including a coupe and compact SUV. However, the company's new European hatchback, based on its smaller A-Class platform, will not reach U.S. shores.

As smaller cars begin to dominate the showrooms, fans of larger vehicles can likely find deals on the used car market.

BMW to recall vehicles for brakes issue

German automaker BMW is recalling nearly 200,000 new and used cars due to an issue with the braking system that could cause leakage.

The automaker said that over time, a leak could develop in the power braking system that would reduce the effectiveness of it. Mechanical braking would still be possible.

The models range from 2002 to 2010 and all of the cars feature V8 or V12 engines. The models include the Alpina B7 from 07-08, the 745i/Li, 750i/Li and 760 i/Li from 02-08, the 645i and 650i from 04-10 and the 545i and 550i from 04-10.

The BMW-owned Rolls Royce Phantom from 2003 onwards is the final car being recalled. This $400,000 automobile is notable for its inclusion as luxury cars of this caliber usually aren't involved in recalls. The new Rolls Royce Ghost, however, is unaffected by the problem.

BMW will notify owners in the coming weeks and ask them to take the car into the dealer, where technicians will install a replacement part.

Drivers in the market for a used BMW should keep an eye out for these vehicles and get an assurance from their dealer that the fix has been taken care of before moving ahead with the purchase.

BMW M3 Coupe vs. Ford Mustang GT

When buying a new or used car, some of the most important information lies in the vehicle’s specifications. These numbers – things like horsepower, torque and ride height, ultimately determine how well a car will perform on the road.

Of course, a driver can research all the numbers they want, but it won’t mean anything until they get the car out on the road. Often, a car performs better or worse than the numbers initially indicate. The driving experience can also be highly subjective. One driver may want a smooth ride above all else, while another likes to feel the seat vibrate as they open up the engine. Many factors contribute to the right car.

American muscle car fans will contend that nothing beats sitting behind the wheel of a Mustang. BMW purists, meanwhile, will tout the blazing speeds and smooth rides of an M3 Coupe. For years, Ford‘s signature car couldn’t compete with its European rival. But now, with a complete redesign to the Mustang line, MotorTrend felt it was time to take a 2011 Mustang GT to the track and test it against the BMW M3 Coupe.

With both equipped with V8 engines, the Mustang slightly edges out the M3. While the Coupe boasts 2 more horsepower (414 to 412,) the Mustang has a better power-to-weight ratio (8.8 “pounds per pony” to the M3’s 8.6), meaning its horses do a bit more work and make it slightly faster. Although both cars posted a 4.4 second 0-60 time, the Mustang beat the M3 in longer straight races. Yet that means nothing on an actual track, with turns involved. This battle couldn’t be settled just yet.

To keep things fair, the cars can be driven in two different styles. Inexperienced drivers will opt for electronic stability control and other assisted driving implements on, while pros will turn all those off and do things manually. So the news source had two different drivers attempt lap times at the track – the unprofessional automotive writer and a racing champ, Randy Pobst.

In the end, the cars were evenly matched. The “average” driver posted a faster time with the Mustang by about half a second, while the pro favored the M3 by .09 seconds. The M3 costs a fair bit more, but preference ultimately comes down to what a driver is looking for from a vehicle – both are mean machines capable of handling any track.

Either way, the prices on these bad boys will set drivers back a bit, so they may want to wait a few years until the models hit the used car market before making a decision. But if drivers want to get behind the wheel now, they can likely find a late-model used Ford or BMW at their local dealer today.

Mercedes-Benz developing “shooting break”

Although only a few cars have been made in the style throughout history, the “shooting break” may be making a small comeback. The shooting break vehicle style takes a basic 2-door sports coupe and adds a squared-off hatchback trunk.

4WheelsNews.com reports that BMW has revealed plans for a shooting break variant of its upcoming 6-Series. Its chief rival, Mercedes-Benz, has also revealed a concept version dubbed the CLS Shooting Break.

Now, Mercedes is rumored to be putting its vehicle into production. The car will reportedly be called the CLC and will be slotted between the C-Class sedan and wagon.

According to the news source, the origin of the “shooting break” term came from carriages that were used to break in horses and transport goods used for hunting. The cars are somewhat popular with the small segment of luxury drivers who like the sleek two-door coupe style but need the extra space for golf bags or other cargo. Mercedes’ design may break from tradition by adding two more doors, making it closer to a station wagon.

Fans of this particular style may want to search for a used BMW Z3 Coupe, a classic version of the shooting break style.

BMW to enter four-door coupe market

With many luxury automakers debuting four-door coupes, like the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes CLS and upcoming Audi A7, it only makes sense that BMW would follow suit when it debuts the Grand Coupe in 2012.

According to Automotive News, BMW’s development chief Klaus Draeger has confirmed that the company will put its Grand Coupe concept car into production. The four-door vehicles will be based on BMW’s 6-Series, which is set to debut a two-door model in 2011.

Draeger told the news source that the pricing and technology will be close to the 6-Series, which is expected to retail for around $93,560. The company is also considering a hybrid option.

“We are in position to bring out an additional hybrid version since we are using the same powertrain architecture as the 5, 6 or 7 series,” said Draeger.

BMW says that it is aiming the Grand Coupe at sedan fans who also appreciate the ability to get behind the wheel and drive as opposed to the “chauffeur-driven” clientele of its 7-Series.

Drivers who see themselves in a BMW don’t need to break the bank in order to achieve that dream. There are many used BMWs available that may fall into a more affordable price range.

Andy Warhol’s used BMW on display in museum

The great thing about buying used BMWs is that there is a chance that the car will become a true classic and appreciate with time as it becomes a collector’s item. That’s even more true if the owner was especially famous. It’s particularly amazing if the owner was Andy Warhol and he added his own iconoclastic touch to the vehicle.

Andy Warhol’s used BMW is now considered a work of art, and is on display at the Palace of Arts in Budapest for a limited time.

According to car blog Jalopnik, the legendary BMW M1 of Warhol’s has quite a history. Andy Warhol painted the car in 23 minutes, and the random splotches of vibrant colors haven’t completely worn off in the three decades since its inception. BMW raced the vehicle at the 1979 24 hours of Le Mans, where it came in sixth overall.

Now, the car is considered to be art. In many ways, it is, according to the news source. Whatever drivers think of the man who painted it, any M1 is considered to be a work of art by some collectors.

Buying a used BMW carries with it a significant legacy. And if a consumer happens to stumble upon an old M1, they might just want to snap it up on the spot, as the car is legendary with or without an artist’s touch.

Mercedes set to surpass Lexus as America’s favorite luxury vehicle

Although Lexus, the luxury division of Japanese automaker Toyota, has enjoyed ten years of domination in the U.S. luxury market, a wave of recalls and an increase in quality from Mercedes-Benz means there may be a new king of the luxury market by the end of the year.

Bloomberg reports that Lexus may lose its crown when all is said and done in 2010, as the continued bad press from the recalls by Lexus and Toyota have dissuaded discerning drivers from making purchases with Lexus. Instead, drivers are turning to German luxury automakers like Mercedes, BMW and Audi, for their luxury car needs.

Mercedes very nearly took the title of top seller during the first half of 2010, shipping less than 500 vehicles fewer than its Japanese rival. While the luxury industry in general is booming after the recession depressed 2009, Lexus’ recovery has been marred by quality concerns. The Japanese automaker posted a 19 percent increase in U.S. deliveries during the first half, but Mercedes grew 25 percent to close the gap.

According to Edmunds, Lexus’ 2.1 percent market share may fall to 1.98 percent by the end of the year, which would be enough to allow both Mercedes-Benz and BMW to surpass the brand as America’s favorite luxury vehicles.

Those shopping on a budget don’t need to price themselves out of a luxury vehicle. By shopping for used cars, driver can easily get a used Mercedes or BMW for a fraction of their sticker price.

BMW updates earnings outlook

Strong sales have caused BMW to update its earnings outlook for the year, as surprising demand for luxury vehicles has caused the market to begin to rebound.

BMW originally predicted sales to increase this year by a single-digit percentile to around 1.3 million vehicles. However, brisk sales in China and demand for its 5-Series model have caused the automaker to revise those statements, instead predicting 10 percent growth and over 1.4 million cars sold, according to BusinessWeek.

Sales of BMW vehicles rose 13 percent during the first half of the year. BMW says that its second quarter results, which it will report on August 3rd will reflect the increased demand.

BMW has gained market share in China, as the company’s vehicles proved popular. The strong surge in demand has caused BMW to ship an additional 10,000 3-Series vehicles than it initially predicted it would sell.

"It’s not just strong sales in China, it’s also the delivery of new models and the effect of cost-cutting steps," John Buckland, an analyst at MF Global UK Ltd, told the news source.

In addition, BMW announced that its redesigned 5-Series sedan was sold out in all markets worldwide.

Those who see themselves in a BMW don’t need to break the bank to do so. It might be possible to find deals on used BMW vehicles by visiting local dealers.

Used BMWs may have steering issues

Those in the market for a used BMW might want to beware, as one iteration of the company’s Z4 sports car could have a power steering issue.

Reuters reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will investigate 48,764 units of the Z4 that were sold between 2003 and 2005. The regulatory body has received 107 complaints of a loss of power steering in the vehicle.

Hydraulic power steering systems allow drivers to easily navigate a vehicle with minimal effort. However, should the system fail, steering wheels can lock up or bind, requiring the driver to exert undue pressure in order to maintain the car’s trajectory.

The specific problem with the Z4 also seems more likely at speeds over 45 miles per hour and heat over 75 degrees.

The complaints included one accident, and several losses of control with “near-miss incidents,” according to the news source.

Consumers looking for a used car may want to steer clear of the Z4 until the investigation is complete. However, there are plenty of deals to be found on other used BMW models that are unaffected by the issue.
