Why Are Some Cars So Ugly?

shutterstock_324976514

Have you ever noticed that some cars are just plain ugly? Have you ever wondered why this is the case? Well, before you start to blame things on bad designers, realize that a lack of designing skills is rarely the case. Producing a car is an expensive and complex process. What this means is that compromises are going to be made unless you’re buying a Rolls Royce that costs half your family fortune.

Cost is a major factor when it comes to automotive design. The other major factor is quality.

You must understand that most automakers are designing and building cars for the market majority and the market majority is made up of your average Joe, who isn’t going to spend an entire year’s income on a car. In fact, many people prefer buying a used car as it is more cost effective.

Now, add some government and quality standards to the mix and you’ve got a complex issue on your hands. You need to create a vehicle that meets all those standards and is still affordable to the consumer. That’s just not possible without making a few compromises. So, what’s the first area that’s going to get compromised? It’s the vehicle’s appearance because that’s the only area that’s not going to drastically affect the overall performance and quality of the vehicle.

High end vehicles look amazing because the consumers who buy them are willing to spend every penny, which means automakers can’t and don’t have to make significant compromises.

Other than that, there is also the issue of use and practicality. For instance, the Toyota Venza displayed at SEMA this year looked great compared to the standard version, but, you would never be able to drive such a vehicle in an off-road situation because of the tiny gaps around the wheels. On the other hand, a standard Venza does not have that problem and can be used in off-road situations.

Since, the Venza is primarily an SUV; its design must fit its real purpose.

Saving Money When Buying a Used Car

shutterstock_130513676

If you have bought a used car, there is a possibility that you could save a significant amount of money by increasing the deductible in your car insurance. A lot of factors determine the amount of money that you need to dish out for the insurance premium. The factors include your age, driving history, the place you live and marital status. While the other factors are beyond your control, one thing that could do to increase your savings is to change the insurance deductible.

The deductible part in your insurance claim is the amount of money that you need to pay out of your pocket before filing the insurance claim. Just in case your total claim is $3,000 and your deductible component is $500, the company will pay you only $2,500 after taking out the deductible component. The insurance company considers that the higher the deductible amount, the lesser chance a car owner will file claim for a lower claim amount.

It has been seen that by increasing the deductible amount to $500 from $250, there is a 7 percent savings in car premium. On an average, you could decrease your premium by 16 percent if you increase the deductible amount to $2,000 from $500. The amount of savings would also depend on your insurer in addition to the state where you might be living.

How Many Miles is Too Many Miles for a Used Car

shutterstock_369995453

Well, just in case you are finding it difficult to procure a vehicle loan or you want to spend less on the monthly installments, then buying a used car might be a good idea. However, you need to be more careful while buying a used car than buying a brand new car. While you do need to consider the cost of the vehicle, you do need to consider the extra bucks for unseen repairs as well. While, you might manage to get a used car spending a lesser amount of money, you need to keep some money in the reserve so as to tackle emergencies.

Consequently, one of the things that you need to see is the number of miles the prospective car might have traveled. This magic figure might be a good way to asses if the concerned car is purchasable or not. Usually, mile coverage of about 12,000 per year is considered to be normal. Although some cars travel less than that, there are other cars that might have traveled much more. Thus, a car that was bought in 2002 could be considered to be bought if it has traveled close to 60,000 miles in 2007. It is better to avoid a car that has covered more than 110,000 miles. Additionally, more miles on the highway are better than more miles along the city roads.
