Used Car Buying Guide – Part III

Cobalt Used Car

Now it is time to find dealers of used cars and ensure you have a vehicle which is reliable, safe, and cheap. Take a look at some of the places you can purchase them.

  1. Private owners: The best deal you can get is from the owner of the car. This is because the only thing on their mind is to sell the vehicle (for whatever reason). You do not have to deal with overly friendly salespeople and simply stick to the mechanics and finances of the car.
  2. Used-car dealers: Dealerships usually have a huge collection of cars waiting to find a new owner. They also provide financial assistance by giving you the option of paying through installments or other means. Find reputed dealers by researching them online and talking to people you know who have purchased their vehicles there.
  3. Mechanics: The handy mechanic shop may be selling cars they have serviced whose owners no longer need them. The price you get at the mechanic’s will be lower than a dealership but the collection may not be varied.
  4. Online: You can now research, investigate, sort, and buy a used car online. The process is simple but risky because you are not inspecting the car physically. Nevertheless, you can choose a car and call up the dealer to get more information before purchasing it.

No matter the seller, it is best you inspect the vehicle personally and take it for a spin before you even begin the negotiation. Take time to think about your decision to buy a used car to ensure you made the right one. To buy a used car, walk into New Jersey State Auto Auction today.

Don't let your car fall apart this summer.

How to prepare your car for extreme temperatures

While you might like the hot weather that comes with summer, your car isn't exactly a fan of those extreme temperatures. Excessive warmth can cause damage to your tires, battery and engine, and even keep your air conditioning system from running properly, according to Autotrader. However, with the routine maintenance and care, your ride will do just fine in the blazing heat.

Here are four tips for keeping your vehicle safe during the dog days of summer:

1. Get your fluids checked
During the summer months, monitoring your engine coolant is key. This fluid keeps your ride from overheating and ultimately breaking down. Most cars have a closed system for coolant, so checking and filling it is a simple task you can complete on your own. The same goes for your windshield washer fluid – it's easy to add and it's a must when you're driving in the summer, especially with the amount of bugs you'll likely squash during your road trip.

"Always monitor your fluids."

An oil change is always important, but it's especially crucial during the warmer months – when you don't change it, the engine becomes too hot, which isn't ideal in excessive heat. Eventually, if you keep skipping this maintenance task, your engine will shut down completely. Don't let this happen while you're on the road this summer, you'll end up drenched in sweat on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

2. Monitor your battery
Did you know that the warm weather has an impact on your battery, too? According to the Allstate Blog, the liquid inside your battery evaporates as temperatures rise, causing it to die. If your battery is old, it might not even hold a charge or jump-start after this happens. It's common to forget about maintaining your battery, but you should make it a priority to replace it every three years or so. If you don't know how old your current one is, it's worth taking it to the shop to find out.

3. Change your tires
Extreme temperatures put added stress on your tires, according to Car and Driver. The heat will also cause your air pressure to rise. Be cautious and get your tire condition and air pressure checked monthly during the summer. Always be sure to rotate your tires and get them changed every 5,000 miles.

A new set of tires will help you ride smoothly all summer.A new set of tires will help you ride smoothly all summer.

4. Maintain your air conditioning
There's nothing better than rolling down the windows and blasting your music on a summer's day, but only if the weather permits. If the temperatures are too high, you'll rely on your air conditioning to keep you and your friends cool. Therefore, it's important to have your system checked annually, especially if it seems like it's not working as efficiently as it should. Autotrader suggested checking your owner's manual to see when it's time to change your filter. Then, take it to the shop for some maintenance.

Saving your car is worth the cost
The maintenance services you should perform on your vehicle this summer might seem expensive, but they'll be worth it in the long run.

"It takes very little time and money to make sure your car runs properly during summer, and although breakdowns happen, they can definitely be minimized by taking a few extra preventive maintenance steps," executive director of Car Care Council Rich White told Car and Driver.

The season of summer might be coming to a close soon, but that doesn't mean the hot temperatures aren't going to stick around. To be cautious, consider taking your ride in for its routine maintenance at NJ Auto Auction. We have a service shop with technicians who will make certain your car is running smoothly.

Used Car Buying Guide – Part II

Cobalt Used Car

You know why you want a used car but how much are you willing to shell out for it? Used cars can range anywhere between $10,000 and $30,000. It depends on the features and condition of the car. Make sure your finances are in order before you decide to purchase.

You may be thinking, for $30,000 you can buy a brand new car rather than a used one. While that’s true, you are able to afford a luxury car such as a used Mercedes-Benz E-Class or Lexus RX for the same amount you would spend on a brand new Ford or Toyota. The decision to go ahead with the purchase depends on the car you have in mind and the amount you are willing to pay for it.

An important point to remember is to discuss finances after you have seen the car and ensured it is in top condition. Check each and every inch of the car thoroughly before you even start asking questions. Salespeople usually try to hurry the deal so that you end up buying a car which is not worth the money. Be wary of such dealers.

When it comes to price, let the dealer begin the negotiation. Never disclose your finances to them. They may amp up the price if the car is valued lower because they are now aware of what you can afford. Do your homework before you step into their parking lot. It will ensure you do not get conned into paying more than what the car is worth. The key is to be assertive and negotiate a fair deal.

Used Car Buying Guide – Part I

Cobalt Used Car

When a dealership or owner is trying to sell their car, it is not uncommon to oversell by exaggerating and sugar coating facts. Asking the right questions will help you understand the car and its dealer. The following are some important questions you need to ask the seller.

  • Why is the car being sold? You may be able to gauge the vehicle’s condition from this question. There should be a valid explanation from the seller’s side instead of a well-crafted story. If they evade the question, you can look for another car elsewhere.
  • Can I have a look at the maintenance history? A seller can spin the yarn and sell you a story on why it is being sold but the paperwork is hard to spin. Even though you will not get details of every bump and scratch, you can request service records to ensure the car has been maintained properly.
  • Can I take the car for a test drive? A test drive is important to check if every component of the car is up to the mark. You get to know the condition of the engine, transmission, interior, and wheels only if you take it for a test drive.
  • Can I show it to my mechanic? Your mechanic is an auto expert you can trust. They will be able to tell you if anything is wrong with the vehicle by scrutinizing it thoroughly. In case the seller answers in the negative, walk away.

Ask questions until you are convinced the car is worth the buy. If you are convinced about the merits of buying a used car, ensure you do not end up with a lemon by asking the right questions.

How good are alternate sources of heat on your car?- III

HEater Vents

Electric car heaters are not that efficient. Even powerful units are nothing in comparison to heat output generated by a factory heater.

Substitute car heaters which utilize hot engine coolant and not electricity are different. A few of these units are weak when compared to the factory system. Others are fitted with blower motors which are not as robust as the factory system. The pricier replacement car heaters, however, can generate substantial quantities of heat.

The typical wattage found for different kinds of substitute car heaters include the cigarette lighter heater at 150W, the Dual mode electric heater at either 150 or 280W and the Direct wired electric heater at 300W. To compare, any replacement heater which is reliant on the hot coolant will generate anywhere from 12,000 to 40,000 BTU per hour. This is the equivalent of the 3,500 to 11,000-watt heater. The numbers say the truth, and they are not even close.

Replacement car heaters are not cheap. Typical units cost around $200 and the powerful units are much more expensive. In contrast heater cores may cost $50 or less for parts.  A few heater cores can be simply replaced, and in this case there is absolutely no reason to purchase any replacement heater system. However, buy if the system is complicated. To buy the best heaters, drive to the New Jersey State Auto Auction.
