Distracted Driving is Still an Issue for Teens

Teens are four times more likely to get into car accidents than older drivers, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A recent survey from Consumer Reports indicates young drivers are also prone to engaging in distracted driving despite knowing the risks, which could be a key contributor to the rate of teen driving accidents. The report found 29 percent of teen drivers admitted to texting behind the wheel in the past month and 47 percent have made phone calls while driving.

However, when asked why they have stopped or at least curbed their behaviors, 61 percent reported learning of the dangers of distracted driving. Laws against cell phone use as well as the influence of family members also helped some teens put down their phones when they're behind the wheel.

"Our survey showed that while far too many young people are driving while distracted, they are less likely to do so when their parents, friends or siblings set a good example," said Rik Paul, auto editor for Consumer Reports. "We encourage everyone to stop the car in a safe place if they need to use a cell phone. And if they're riding with a driver using a handheld phone, ask him or her to put it down and stop gambling with their safety."

There are many different smartphone apps available that can combat phone usage while driving. Some apps sense when the phone is traveling above a certain speed and disable calls and texts. Others can be activated before embarking on a drive and will respond to calls and text messages letting people know why the driver cannot come to the phone.

Parents who want their teens to get behind the wheel of reliable used cars in NJ can head to New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer has a variety of makes and models and all the cars are CARFAX certified.

Kia Shelving the Sedona, For Now

Thanks to a number of redesigns, South Korean automaker Kia has become increasingly popular over the last several years, and now it's sending another one of its cars to be retooled. The company's minivan, the Kia Sedona, will not be returning for 2013 but may make a return in 2014 with a new look, according to The Car Connection.

It's certainly a good decision. While much of Kia's fleet has been given a sporty, more youthful look, the Sedona has not been given the same treatment. Despite getting a headlight update in 2011, it's one of the only cars offered by Kia that has not been drastically redesigned over the last decade or so. Additionally, with its main competitors offering an updated look, it is about time for the Sedona to get a facelift. While there are no definite plans for a 2014 model, it seems likely.

"We see the minivan market as one that we want to stay in," Kia spokesman James Hope told the news source.

Drivers looking for a used minivan, whether Sedona or not, may want to take a few tips from Kelley Blue Book, which recently revealed its picks for the best cars in the segment.

At the top of the list was the Honda Odyssey, which is ideal for larger families who need considerably more room. It also includes a number of useful features, from small refrigerators to entertainment screens. Also making the cut, according to KBB, were the Ford Flex, Toyota Sienna and Chevrolet Traverse.

Anybody searching for a used car in New Jersey, whether it be a compact vehicle or an SUV, should head to New Jersey State Auto Auction. With a wide variety of makes and models at affordable prices, there's something for everyone.

Tennessee Couple Breaks Record for Most Miles Driven on One Tank of Gas

A Tennessee couple recently broke the record for most miles driven on one tank of gas in their Volkswagen Passat TDI. John and Helen Taylor have dedicated their lives to efficient driving, and have gone around the world to learn about and teach good fuel economy practices. They hold more than 90 different records for driving and fuel conservation, and the title of longest drive on a single tank of gas is the latest to be added to their list. The Taylors chose a Passat with a 2.0-liter TDI clean diesel inline four-cylinder engine as it has an estimated fuel economy of 43 miles per gallon.

The three-day trip took place across nine states from Houston, Texas, to Sterling, Virginia. The couple drove their Passat along a standard route during normal driving hours to ensure they would encounter real life situations like traffic. They even includes 120 pounds of luggage on their journey to show drivers it is possible to get more out of a gallon of gas. The car averaged about 84.1 miles per gallon.

"We're excited to have broken the record for longest distance driven on one tank of fuel," said John Taylor. "The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip. It offers plenty of interior and cargo space, yet it is frugal enough to help us achieve this record."

To ensure the Taylors did not cheat, the speedometer and odometer were calibrated at a certified testing station in Texas. Houston police oversaw this as well as the initial fill-up and the sealing of the gas tank before the couple embarked on their journey. They beat the previous record of 1,526.6 miles set by a different diesel-run Passat in Europe.

Tips for Buying Used Cars

If you're thinking about buying a used car in NJ, there are a few steps you should take before you head to the dealership. You should consider everything from what type of car you need to how much money you are willing and able to spend on a purchase.

First, it is important to have a good idea of your financial standing. The Federal Trade Commission grants consumers one free report each year from AnnualCreditReport.com. This does not supply you with your exact credit score, but it gives you the chance to see what the dealer will see when you apply for a loan. Even if your credit is less than perfect, you'll be accepted at New Jersey State Auto Auction thanks to a partnership with the Credit Acceptance Corporation.

When you have narrowed down your options to a few cars, you should take them for test drives. This gives you a chance to feel how each vehicle handles and make sure all of the features inside the car are in working order. Be sure to test the windows, windshield wipers, lights, dashboard buttons and other items to ensure they work properly. It is also a good idea to drive the car on the highway as well as in the city to ensure it drives well in both situations.

Before you sign off on your car, get a vehicle history report and have an independent mechanic take a look at the vehicle to ensure there is no major prior damage. If there is, you may encounter problems down the road that can be costly. All the vehicles at NJ Auto are CARFAX certified, so drivers know they'll be getting behind the wheel of safe, reliable rides.

Amanda Bynes Finds Herself in Trouble Behind the Wheel Again

Not long after being arrested for driving under the influence, former child star Amanda Bynes found herself in some driving trouble again over the weekend. Bynes allegedly sideswiped another vehicle while trying to pass it, sparking a chase that involved six police cars and a helicopter, E! News reports.

Despite the response, the accident was seemingly much more minor than it was made out to be. The man driving the other car says she made contact with her black Range Rover when she was passing him on the right. When she didn't pull over, he called the police and reported a hit and run.

Law enforcement officials were eventually able to catch up with the "She's All That" star and found her car barely suffered any noticeable damage. Investigators say it was likely that she was unaware she even made contact with the motorists vehicle.

"She wasn't given a citation, no one was arrested, no one was hurt," a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told E! "She didn't even know she was involved in an accident. We took a traffic collision report and there will be no further investigation."

While Bynes may be not have been in the wrong here, the fact that she has had two run-ins with the law in just a matter of weeks in a little troubling. Bynes' first issue occurred in early April when she got in a minor fender bender with a police car and was arrested for driving under the influence. Additionally, in March she got a ticket for talking on her phone behind the wheel.

Although you certainly don't want to drive like Bynes, you can still imitate her good taste in cars by heading to New Jersey State Auto Auction. With a wide variety of makes and models at affordable prices, there is the right car for everyone.

Four Land Rovers Drive from England to China in 50 Days

Nearly two months ago, a team of drivers took off in four Land Rovers from Birmingham, England, and headed to Beijing, China. The trip, taken to retrace a similar journey made in 1956, took 50 days and covered 8,000 miles of rural and urban roads in 13 countries. Even with careful planning, the team encountered a number of roadblocks that set them off course and delayed the journey. However, their April 26 arrival still coincided with AutoChina 2012, Beijing's annual car show.

After a short visit to the Geneva Motor Show, the caravan of Land Rovers headed to Italy's Aosta Valley, where the motorists witnessed a controlled avalanche. To keep the winter theme alive, the drivers headed to Austria to try their hand at ice driving. The tour also included stops in Vienna, Budapest and even Chernobyl, Russia. After touring the site of the devastating nuclear meltdown, the Land Rover parade stopped briefly in Moscow before heading across the natural landscape of Eastern Russia to China.

When the SUVs finally reached the alpine pass leading into China, the road was blocked with snow, which delayed the journey a few days. After the snow was cleared, it took the drivers another 72 hours to reach Beijing, but not without a few stops in between.

American drivers who are planning to take their own road trips this summer will not likely encounter the same winter conditions as the Land Rover Squad did. However, it is essential they make sure their cars are running smoothly before they hit the road. New Jersey State Auto Auction's Total Car Care Center is a great place for people with used cars in NJ to take their vehicles for a tuneup before they leave on an 8,000-mile journey of their own.

Chevy Corvette that May Have Belonged to Neil Armstrong Hits eBay

Every now and then, an auto auction crops up online that features a car with celebrity ties, and the latest eBay Motors sale to make headlines is that of a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette. Classic cars such as this one are pretty hard to come by these days as it is, but this gem has a very unique history – its first owner was Neil Armstrong.

The eBay listing claims Armstrong was given the Corvette in 1966 by Jim Rathman Chevrolet in Florida as part of a special program that gave all astronauts a new Corvette for a year. When Armstrong gave his up, it was purchased by another NASA employee, who held onto it until it was sold to the current owner earlier this year.

The seller does not pussy-foot around the fact that this vehicle is in desperate need of a lot of major work. With the claim that the first man to walk on the moon once sat behind the wheel, the bids are already nearing $250,000. AutoBlog points out the seller offers no proof the Corvette ever belonged to Neil Armstrong aside from a General Motors Protect-O-Plate in the owner's manual with the name "N. A. Armstrong" typed on it.

Drivers looking for used cars in NJ that actually run can head to New Jersey State Auto Auction, which offers a wide variety of makes and models for affordable prices. Motorists will have plenty of options to choose from, whether they want to get behind the wheel of a used Corvette or would prefer something more economical.

Auto Loans Now Easier to Come By

Anybody who attempted to get a car loan during the height of the recession likely ran into some resistance. That was especially true for consumers who may have had a less-than-ideal credit score. However, as the economy continues its recovery, many analysts are finding that borrowers are returning to normal when it comes to approving auto loans for people with poor credit, according to CNN Money.

The reason for the increased likelihood of approval stems from the fact that banks were too afraid to take on risky loans during the recession. Now that it seems as if the economy is strengthening, there's no fear in bringing on a borrower who has lower credit. Specifically, banks are more willing to ignore a credit score and take the reasons behind missed payments into consideration.

"Having looked at over 5,000 loan applications, credit score is not the best indicator of people's ability to repay," Jesse Toprak, an industry analyst with Truecar.com, told CNN.

Many of the reasons have nothing to do with a borrower's ability to pay back an auto loan. For example, many people had their credit score damaged due to mortgage payments, but are still capable of paying back the auto loan.

While lenders are more likely to approve subprime auto loans, that doesn't mean applicants should ignore their credit score. There are a number of ways to rebuild a low one, and repaying auto loans on times is one of the most effective methods.

Anybody who is concerned they won't get approved for a loan may want to head to New Jersey State Auto Auction. Thanks to a relationship with the Credit Acceptance Corporation, NJ Auto is able to offer guaranteed credit approval to everyone, regardless of their history.

Lingenfelter Performance’s Upgraded Camaro ZL1 Breaks 200-mph on the Track

The new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 recently made waves in the high-performance world with a little aftermarket tweaking by the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering company. After upgrading the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from 580 horsepower to more than 700 horses with three upgrade packages, the company took the car to the Muncie Dragway in Albany, Indiana, on Monday to put it to the test.

David Freiburger, the editor-in-chief of HOT ROD magazine, got behind the wheel of this supercharged muscle car and put the pedal to the metal. He raced the Camaro up to 202.67 miles per hour, the first time a ZL1 passed the 200-mph mark. This test run also boasted another first for the Camaro ZL1, a quarter-mile drive in less than 11 seconds. The Chevy's first run in the 10s took 10.79 seconds with a top speed of 134.36 mph.

"The Lingenfelter crew couldn't be more excited to make history as the first 2012 ZL1 Camaro to exceed 200 mph, and to celebrate this victory on the heels of becoming the first company to run a ZL1 in the 10s," said Ken Lingenfelter, owner of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering. "We are very proud to have David drive our car and to share this accomplishment with HOT ROD magazine, an icon in the world of speed and high-performance vehicles."

The performance company installed a custom camshaft, special cylinder heads, new top and bottom pulleys, a custom air intake filter, tires and wheels. This gave the car 720 hp and 650 lb-ft. of torque, making it more powerful than the 2013 Shelby GT500, which claims to be the most powerful production car in the world.

While a high-powered race car may not be in the cards for every driver, those looking for used cars in NJ with a bit of a kick will find plenty of makes and models at New Jersey State Auto Auction.
