Unfortunately for many drivers, however, this is a relatively common occurrence, with thousands of thefts happening each year. From the start of 2009 to the end of 2012, more than 31,000 automobiles were reported stolen across the U.S. As much as 70 percent of that number was comprised of midsize and large sedans, which were among the most common targets, according to data collected by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NICB&#039;s findings showed there are a few makes and models of cars that are more susceptible to theft than others. Leading the pack is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njstateauto.com\/preowned\/index.cfm?make=Toyota\" target=\"_self\" class=\"dnautolink\">Toyota<\/a> Camry, which had 4,619 reported thefts from 2009 through 2012. That is more than 1,000 ahead of the second-place <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njstateauto.com\/preowned\/index.cfm?make=Chevrolet\" target=\"_self\" class=\"dnautolink\">Chevrolet<\/a> Impala, which may be attributed to the fact that the Camry is one of the most popular vehicles on the road.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also ranking in the top five was the Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njstateauto.com\/preowned\/index.cfm?make=Ford\" target=\"_self\" class=\"dnautolink\">Ford<\/a> Fusion. Slightly more luxurious options such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njstateauto.com\/preowned\/index.cfm?make=Dodge\" target=\"_self\" class=\"dnautolink\">Dodge<\/a> Charger and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njstateauto.com\/preowned\/index.cfm?make=Chrysler\" target=\"_self\" class=\"dnautolink\">Chrysler<\/a> 300 were included in the top 10 targets as well, but much of the list was dominated by common, affordable vehicles that are found throughout the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are many actions that play a role in keeping a vehicle safe from theft. For one, day-to-day steps such as parking in well-lit areas, covering possessions and remaining aware of your surroundings can go a long way toward avoiding problems. However, long-term actions, including getting regular tune ups to ensure security systems, remote starters and locks are working correctly are also important.<\/p>\n<p>That&#039;s why drivers should schedule appointments at spots like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njstateauto.com\" target=\"_self\" class=\"dnautolink\">NJ State Auto Auction<\/a>&#039;s Total Car Care Center.
