Mercury Information:Mercury was created as a new division of Ford Motor Company in the late 1930s. The intention was to create a bridge between mainstream Ford models and the luxury Lincoln brand to compete with General Motors' specialty brands - including Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick. The brand was combined with Lincoln in 1945 and prospered for many years. Following a drastic decline in sales in 2009, Ford shut down the Mercury line in order to focus on the Lincoln brand.There have been many successful Mercury models over the years, such as the Cougar, which was introduced in the 1990s. This sporty compact car was one of the few Mercury models that was not rebranded as a Ford model. The Grand Marquis may be the most well known Mercury model. The brand also had a number of other vehicles across a wide class range. The Monterey covered the minivan class, and the Mountaineer and Mariner provided SUV options.
