Jeep Information:Jeep is a household name when it comes to off-road capable vehicles, and it is easy to see why, since the automobiles were first developed to be used in war conditions. The U.S. government turned to American automakers to develop a fast, lightweight all-terrain vehicle in 1940, and of the 135 manufacturers asked to present a design, only three were able to do so in the 49-day timeframe. Bantam, Willys and Ford combined different elements from each of their designs to create the 'Quad'. In the following years, the designs were tweaked and upgraded as the cars were tested in World War II conditions. By 1945, the cars were called Jeeps, and the origin of the name is still debated to this day.The Wrangler may be the best known Jeep model, as the boxy styling can be traced back to the 1940s, but it was not given the name 'Wrangler' until the late 80s. The Wagoneer, first introduced in 1963, was another popular model, but it was discontinued in 1991. The Cherokee, which provides off-road capabilities as well as comfort and styling, is another Jeep model that has been highly successful over the years. These days, Jeep also offers the Patriot, Liberty and Compass, which are all similar to the Grand Cherokee in styling and functionality. Drivers in the market for a versatile vehicle may want to check out the Jeep offerings on the lot at New Jersey Auto Auction.
