How good are alternate sources of heat on your car?- III

HEater Vents

Electric car heaters are not that efficient. Even powerful units are nothing in comparison to heat output generated by a factory heater.

Substitute car heaters which utilize hot engine coolant and not electricity are different. A few of these units are weak when compared to the factory system. Others are fitted with blower motors which are not as robust as the factory system. The pricier replacement car heaters, however, can generate substantial quantities of heat.

The typical wattage found for different kinds of substitute car heaters include the cigarette lighter heater at 150W, the Dual mode electric heater at either 150 or 280W and the Direct wired electric heater at 300W. To compare, any replacement heater which is reliant on the hot coolant will generate anywhere from 12,000 to 40,000 BTU per hour. This is the equivalent of the 3,500 to 11,000-watt heater. The numbers say the truth, and they are not even close.

Replacement car heaters are not cheap. Typical units cost around $200 and the powerful units are much more expensive. In contrast heater cores may cost $50 or less for parts.  A few heater cores can be simply replaced, and in this case there is absolutely no reason to purchase any replacement heater system. However, buy if the system is complicated. To buy the best heaters, drive to the New Jersey State Auto Auction.
