Chevrolet to debut new engine in 2013 Malibu

Chevrolet recently announced that it will release its newest engine in the 2013 Malibu. The Ecotec 2.5-liter four-cylinder will be replacing a similar 2.4-liter model that is currently in use, and it is designed to be both more efficient and powerful than the previous version, Motor Trend reports.

The engine will see its increased efficiency due to a push by General Motors to reduce the amount of friction and design a new combustion system. Additionally, the new engine will provide drivers with an impressive 12 percent more horsepower and 16 percent more torque, while also significantly reducing noise.

"The noise intensity is 40 percent less than our 2.4-liter direct-injected engine, which was named one of Ward's 10 Best Engines," Mike Anderson, global chief engineer for GM said. "Engineers also tuned the 2.5L to deliver more of its torque at lower rpm, giving the Malibu a stronger feel at launch and during on-demand maneuvers, such as passing or accelerating on a freeway entrance ramp."

The Malibu has been one of Chevrolet's most popular cars over the years, and anybody looking to get behind the wheel of the sedan may want to check out New Jersey Auto Auction.

New Ford Explorer, Chevy Equinox the top SUVs

With rising gas prices and an greater emphasis placed on fuel economy, smaller and more fuel-efficient SUVs have become increasingly popular. According to CNN Money, there are a number of SUVs that have helped changed the face of the cars and remain a favorite among consumers.

The Ford Explorer is the first one that comes to mind. The redesigned Explorer has seen a large increase in sales this year thanks in large part to the fact that it has shifted from a truck-based look to a sleeker, more economical one. The Ford Escape has been popular as well due to its impressive 28 miles per gallon.

As for another American standard, Chevrolet has a high-selling smaller SUV as well. The Equinox offers consumers a much more manageable size than some of their other models.

"Maybe it doesn't make sense to get a Tahoe right now, but I still want an SUV," Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive of Edmunds.com, told CNN.

GM, Chrysler have standout August

American automakers General Motors and Ford had a very successful August, but both were behind Chrysler. With a bevvy of updated models, the manufacturer saw a 31 percent rise in sales compared to last year, the 17th month in a row where sales rose in relation to the previous year, USA Today reports.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the boost in sales was the resurgence of the Jeep Wrangler. Compared to August 2010, the classic Jeep sold 58 percent more, giving the model its best month since December 2007. The company also re-branded its Sebring sedan under the name Chrysler 200, and subsequently saw sales jump 142 percent.

As for GM, the venerable company had a good August as well. Specifically, the Chevy Cruze, GMC Arcada and Cadillac CTS all rose in sales.

"The 'new GM' is making the strides it promised. About the only negative signs on GM's spreadsheet of August sales were for models being discontinued or soon to be replaced," says analyst Michelle Krebs told the publication.

General Motors partners with LG to improve electric vehicles

Ford recently announced that it was partnering with Toyota to help create fuel-efficient trucks and SUVs. Not to be outdone, General Motors and LG Group will be teaming up to design electric vehicles in the future.

The partnership seems like a logical one as LG has worked on the electric engine for the popular Chevrolet Volt as well as the Opel Ampera. The venture will focus on finding other areas to use the technology, and seems to be beneficial to LG, GM and consumers.

"Many solutions for tomorrow’s transportation needs may be available more quickly by building on our partnership strategy," said GM vice chairman Steve Girsky. "Consumers benefit by getting the latest fuel-saving technology faster if we work with the best suppliers and we save time and money in the development process."

The move will likely prove to be an important one in the coming years as the U.S. government recently called for cars to have a 54.5 miles per gallon fuel economy by 2025.

Redesigned Chevy Malibu getting European release

The Chevrolet Malibu has been a mainstay in American automotive culture, and the classic car will be making it's European debut later this year at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. General Motors announced that the newly redesigned Malibu will go on sale there for the first time next year, offering motorists a slew of impressive features.

Among the new aspects of the Malibu is a cockpit design that is much more spacious and inviting than in previous years. Additionally, it has a few new storage areas, bluetooth wireless capabilities and a seven-inch touch screen radio.

Furthermore, new Malibu drivers will be treated to a boost in performance as well, highlighted by premium steering and an isolated engine cradle that reduces noise.

"The Chevrolet Malibu is the brand's new top-of-the-range offering, bringing proven value with a premium feel to Europe's midsize segment." said Wayne Brannon, the president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe.

Chevy Volt design to be used in Cadillac

The Chevrolet Volt has been at the forefront of the electric car movement, and now General Motors appears poised to use the Volt as a template for an electric Cadillac. According to GreenCarReports, the model would likely be the concept Cadillac Converj, which may be available as early as 2013.

The Converj debuted two years ago at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, but many speculated that the beautiful car would never be produced for consumers. However, the news source reports that manufacturers have received the go-ahead to begin making the electricity-powered vehicle.

Though it's in the very early stages, the move could be a smart one for GM. Analysts at USA Today point out that the Chevy Volt already has a pretty steep price of nearly $40,000, but Cadillac drivers are probably less likely to stay away from an electric luxury car due to big price tag.

Although the Converj may be a few years away, drivers looking to get behind wheel of a fuel-efficient Honda Accord or Toyota Prius can check out New Jersey Auto Auction, which has plenty of makes and models at affordable prices.

U.S. car industry on the rise, Ford executive says

Often maligned as being unable to compete with Japaneses automakers when it comes to small cars, GM and Ford say they have caught up. According to the Detroit Free Press, both companies are enjoying positive reviews on their latest compact cars – something which has translated into better sales.

In particular, the Ford Fiesta has enjoyed a solid few months. Most recently, it saw a 58 percent jump in July. However, the Fiesta was not alone as the Chevrolet Cruze also experienced a bump and was the top-selling compact car in July.

"I think we've entered a new era in the U.S. where there is more equity in the brands and the products are really competing on equal ground," Ford executive Jim Farley told reporters recently.

Conversely to the success Ford and Chevy are seeing, Japanese manufacturers Honda and Toyota are suffering in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that hit earlier this year.

Chevy hopes to boost production of electric Volt

The Nissan Leaf has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to electric cars, and it looks like General Motors is doing what it can to catch up. Bloomberg reports that the manufacturer is boosting production of the Chevrolet Volt in an effort to jump ahead of Nissan.

It may be tough to do, though. Nissan has sold 3,875 of the fully-electric Leaf, while Chevy is a bit behind at 2,745 Volts sold. As part of its plan to eclipse Nissan, Chevrolet hopes to be building 5,000 Volts a month by January of next year.

Despite the apparent fledgling rivalry between the two electric cars, analysts say it might be too early in the process to tell which car, if any, is better and more popular among consumers.

"It’s too soon to tell any definite direction in the race between the two cars," analyst Ivan Drury told the news source. "Even next year it will be very limited. It’s going to take five to six more years before we see these cars selling over 100,000 a year."

Though such prevalence of electric cars is a few years away, drivers can still check out fuel-efficient options by visiting New Jersey Auto Auction.

GM to release diesel powered Chevy Cruze in 2013

General Motors recently confirmed that it is set to release a diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze, marking the first such passenger car introduced by a Detroit manufacturer since the 1980s. USA Today reports that GM CEO Dan Akerson says the car will hit the market in 2013.

The Cruze will be only the second passenger car, to be offered with the diesel option in the United States the other being the Volkswagen Jetta . The new version will certainly be attractive to drivers looking to boost their fuel economy, as diesel engines get between 20 to 40 percent better mileage.

"I drove it the other day. It is great," Akerson told the publication. "These new diesels are quiet. Should make it in the low- to mid-40s, and that's with an automatic."

According to the news source, the Cruze was the top selling car in the U.S. last month, and was seventh overall throughout the first six months of the year.

American-made SUVs enjoy solid June

Although gas prices are still high, that hasn't deterred drivers from getting behind the wheel of a new American-made SUV. According to USA Today, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all saw strong June sales of their SUVs.

Surprisingly, the sales of SUVs even outpaced that of all U.S. automobiles. Specifically, the cars jumped 28 percen since 2010, compared to just a 7 percent rise in sales of other cars. Additionally, American-made utility vehicles sold better than international models as well, as Japanese-made cars actually had a 1 percent drop.

The best-selling model among SUVs in June was the Ford Escape. Thanks, in large part, to its smaller size, this compact vehicle enjoyed a 43 percent sales jump compared to June sales last year. The Ford Explorer and Ford Edge also performed reasonably well, the news source reports.

In addition to Ford, Chrysler group's Jeep Wrangler remained one of the most popular American sport utility vehicles.
